The award-winning British pianist Joseph Tong enjoys a busy and varied career as soloist, duo pianist, chamber musician, Festival Director and teacher.
Educated at Wells Cathedral School, Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music, Joseph made his Wigmore Hall debut in 1997 as winner of the Maisie Lewis Young Artists Award. Other notable competition successes have included the St Charles International Piano Competition in USA, the Citta di Marsala Competition in Italy,
the ISM Sheffield Competition, 1st Prize in the John Lill Awards and 3rd Prize at the Tokyo International Piano Duo Competition. An English-Speaking Union Scholarship led to a summer spent at the Ravinia Festival near Chicago where he studied with
Claude Frank and played to the legendary pianist Shura Cherkassky.
Joseph Tong is based in London and has given recitals at the Purcell Room on the South Bank, Steinway Hall (for the Keyboard Trust), The Chopin Society and other London
venues including Fairfield Halls Croydon, St James’s Piccadilly, St Martin-in-the-Fields
and St John’s Smith Square, where he gave an all-Sibelius recital in May 2015. Joseph has
appeared on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ and was invited to contribute an article on Sibelius
by International Piano Magazine last year. He recently gave a series of concerts in Finland including at Sibelius’s house, Ainola, and at Hämeenlinna Town Hall.
Other recent highlights have included the Guildford International Music Festival, Newport Cathedral, Marden House in Wiltshire and St George’s Bristol. In addition to regular concerts throughout the UK, Joseph has given recital and concerto performances in Germany, Portugal (for the British Council), Italy, Spain, Japan, USA, Malaysia and Singapore. He also enjoys giving concerts on cruise ships, performing onboard Black Watch, Balmoral, Braemar and Boudicca for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines.
A longstanding and highly successful piano duo with the Japanese pianist Waka Hasegawa (Piano 4 Hands) has led to live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3, WFMT Radio in the USA and recitals at major venues such as Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, St David’s Hall Cardiff, The Lighthouse Poole, St George’s Bristol and numerous festivals including Buxton, Chichester, Cheltenham, Presteigne, Oundle and Bury St Edmunds. Piano 4 Hands has also made a series of critically acclaimed CD recordings on the Quartz label of Debussy, Schubert and John McCabe. These have been chosen as Album of the Week in The Independent and received excellent reviews in Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine (5 Stars) Fanfare Magazine and International Record Review and also highly recommended in the Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music.
Joseph Tong was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2008 and also appointed visiting teacher at Wells Cathedral School. He is also founder and Co-Director of the Bristol International Piano Duo Festival which is held biennially at St George’s Bristol and will next take place from 27th-30th October 2016.
